Keyboard shortcuts

Ctrl / opens a shortcut summary in the app. The tables below are the complete list: those for the dashboard viewer, decks, reports, paginated reports, stories, the AI chat and start pages are made from that summary’s own list. How a right-click, Shift F10 and a click with Shift or Ctrl work on every canvas is on Right-click menus and selecting several things.

The app lists its shortcuts in a dialog you can open from any page.

  1. Press ? on any page to open the keyboard shortcuts. The shortcuts are grouped by what they do, and they change with the page you are on.

Shortcut Action
Ctrl K command palette: Search commands or ask AI. On a deck, dashboard, report or story, its own commands come first, each by its name and with its shortcut
Ctrl Enter (in the command palette) open the typed question in AI chat
Ctrl / keyboard-shortcuts help
F full screen: what you’re reading — a dashboard, report, story or deck — alone, with no menus (not while typing)
Esc or F leave full screen
Esc close dialog / exit focus mode / clear the card selection / fold the open drawer of a canvas’s rail, the keyboard back to its tool
↑ ↓ move through an open menu, including the toolbar menus and the right-click menu on a chart or report block

When panels, dialogs and menus are stacked

Section titled “When panels, dialogs and menus are stacked”

Some windows open on top of others: a side panel opens a dialog, and the dialog opens a menu or a value list. Esc closes only the one on top. Press it again to close the next one down. When a window closes, focus goes back to the button that opened it, so you can carry on from where you were. You can’t click or tab into a window while another one is open over it.

Shortcut Action
Ctrl S save now — a message says Saved once everything has landed, or that some changes weren’t saved
Ctrl Z undo
Ctrl Shift Z or Ctrl Y redo
Ctrl C / Ctrl X copy the selected cards, or cut them (cutting asks first, as deleting does); with text selected, the text
Ctrl V paste the copied cards, each where it sat beside the others — onto any page, so cards move across pages
Ctrl D duplicate the selected cards; a group is copied as a new group
Ctrl A select every card on the page
Shift click / Ctrl click add a card to the selection, or take it out (⌘ click on a Mac, where Ctrl click opens the menu)
Ctrl G / Ctrl Shift G group the selected cards, or ungroup them
Click again / Double-click on a card of a selected group: select that card alone, to change it (Esc goes back to the group)
Ctrl Shift L lock or unlock the selected cards
Ctrl Alt C / Ctrl Alt V copy a card’s format, or paste it onto the selected cards
Tab move between the cards on the canvas, in reading order
Enter or Space select the focused card; with Shift, add it to the selection
← → ↑ ↓ move the selected cards by one grid cell: a group as one, a card picked out of its group alone
Shift ← → ↑ ↓ resize the selected card by one grid cell (of several selected cards, the focused one)
F2 rename the focused card
Shift F10 / Menu key open the menu of the focused card, else of the selected cards, else of the page
Del or Backspace delete the selected cards — it asks first, and Ctrl Z brings them back
Ctrl ] / Ctrl [ move the selected cards one layer up / down, with Free overlap on
Ctrl Shift ] / Ctrl Shift [ bring them to the front / send them to the back
Esc clear the card selection (from a card picked out of a group, back to the group); in Preview, also go back to Edit

The canvas shortcuts stay out of your way while you’re typing in a field, and they’re off in Preview mode, except Esc. Inside a list, a menu, a tab strip or Card settings, the arrow keys and Del belong to that control. Undo and redo work from anywhere in the editor, Card settings, the rail and the bars too; the card commands and the arrow keys act from the canvas only. Esc folds an open drawer, and in Card settings (outside a list) clears the selection. On a card the keyboard is on but that isn’t selected, the card commands do nothing and say to press Enter first. While you drag a field, the drag has the keys.

In the Fields list — see Add fields to a card:

Shortcut Action
Enter add the focused field to the selected card, in the well that fits it — or start a new chart when nothing is selected
↑ ↓ Home End move between fields
F2 open a calculated field’s formula
Space pick the focused field up, to drag it with the keyboard
← → ↑ ↓ while dragging: move to the next or previous drop target — the selected card’s wells, then the charts on the page, then the empty canvas
Space or Enter drop the field on that target
Esc cancel the drag: nothing is added, and the selected card stays selected

In Search fields: Enter adds the first field whose name matches, ↓ moves into the results, and Esc clears the search.

In a well’s + Add field list: type to search, ↑ ↓ move through the fields, Enter adds the highlighted one, and Esc closes the list. When the card has no data model yet, ↑ ↓ Home End move between the models first.

Shortcut Action
← → ↑ ↓ Home End on the Arrange / Edit / Preview switch: change the mode
↑ ↓ Home End in Layers: move between cards
Space in Layers: add the card to the selection, or take it out
Enter in Layers: select the card on its own
F2 in Layers: rename the card
Del or Backspace in Layers: delete the card — it asks first
→ in Layers: reach the row’s buttons (Lock position, Hide, Rename, Delete); ← or Esc goes back to the row
← → Esc on the quick bar over the selected cards: move between its buttons; Esc goes back to the cards
← → along the pills at the canvas’s foot: move between them

In the colour panel a tile opens (see Colours and fonts), the arrow keys move along a section’s swatches and Enter picks one; Esc closes only the panel, back to Card settings on the same tab, with the keyboard on the tile. In the Format tab’s search box, Esc clears the search. The page tabs have keys of their own: see Multi-page dashboards.
